Kathy Kaehler: Fit Mama

Want to look like a star? Maybe not, says celebrity trainer and Today Show fitness expert Kathy Kaehler. “A film person is very motivated because he or she is paid to look a certain way, but it’s a lot of hard work.” While filming Batman Returns Kaehler’s client Michelle Pfeiffer exercised at 4:30 a.m. before hitting the set. Pfeiffer also worked out with Kaehler until the day she delivered her baby. As a busy mom of three boys, Kaehler particularly admires clients like Pfeiffer and Cindy Crawford, busy mothers who still make fitness a priority.

Not everyone is as motivated as Pfeiffer, but Kaehler encourages all women to prioritize fitness. “Find a practical way to fit exercise into your lifestyle,” she says. But what about the common complaint that busy moms don’t have time to exercise? “Not a problem,” Kaehler says. “Just play actively with your kids.”

Kaehler often kicks or throws balls with her boys outside, or she and the boys take their three Labrador Retrievers on long walks. “Playing hard is good for you and your kids. And it burns the kids out,” she laughs. “Even 10 minutes of brisk walking gets your heart rate up and re-energizes your body. At the end of the day you’ll feel less stressed and tired if you exercise.”

But finding time for fitness isn’t always easy. “I just got off a plane from training a client in Las Vegas and I haven’t exercised in seven days,” Kaehler admits. “Some days you can’t do it.” But she encourages moms to try.

Unlike most media personalities, Kaehler didn’t hide from TV cameras during her pregnancy and postpartum period. She traveled from California to New York until the eighth month of her twin pregnancy to appear on the Today Show. “I wanted women to realistically see what pregnancy looks like even though I gained 80 pounds with the boys and looked bloated,” she says.

After delivering her twins, Kaehler was back in the limelight even though her pregnancy weight didn’t magically melt away. “I faithfully exercised and ate healthy foods, but the extra weight hung around while I was nursing my boys,” she says.

Kathy kidsViewers watched Kaehler’s slow, healthy progress towards getting her figure back, and they flooded her with emails applauding her true-to-life efforts. “It made me feel good that women identified with me, and I loved helping them feel better about their own bodies,” she says. Kaehler’s figure took two years to return to normal after her twin pregnancy. “It takes time for the body to bounce back after giving birth, and that’s OK,” she says.

Kaehler urges moms not to push losing weight after birth. “Give your body time to recover. Try to exercise every day, but don’t start a strict diet. Dieting creates a feeling of deprivation and leads to obsessive eating.”

She teaches her kids to eat right and exercise. “I ask my boys what we did today that was good for our bodies. They might say, ‘We walked the dogs and that makes our legs strong and helps our heart. We ate broccoli to build muscles and drank milk for healthy bones.'”

Giving 100 percent to family and work isn’t possible, Kaehler admits. “When something has to fall through the cracks it’s work,” she says. Although jetting off to pump iron with celebrities sounds glamorous, Kaehler would usually rather be home walking the Labs with her boys. “The boys help me push the baby, the dogs are running around in excitement and it’s chaos but it’s so much fun!” she says.

• Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize.
• Just say no. Decide what’s important and let other things go.
• Make time with your kids quality time. On busy days, cook together or do a special craft. Focus all of your attention on the kids.
• Stay on the same page as your spouse with discipline. Work together as a team.
• If you have twins, keep them on the same schedule, and don’t dress them alike.

Kaehler’s biggest challenge as a mom is sleep deprivation. “I haven’t slept in four years,” she laughs. She loves to watch her boys grow, striving to teach them healthy habits and good morals. “I grew up in the Midwest with parents that loved each other and taught me well, and I’m sharing my joy and good memories with my boys,” she says. “It’s amazing to share life experiences with these little people.”

After putting the boys to bed, Kaehler and her husband, Billy Koch, often head for their home gym. “I climb on the bike and Billy hits the treadmill. Sometimes life gets hectic and we don’t get much time to talk. Exercising together is good for us. It gets rid of physical stress and it’s nice to have an adult conversation with no one saying ‘Mama’,” she explains.

Every week Kaehler flies to New York to film the Today Show, and she savors her flying time. “Most people hate spending time on airplanes, but for me it’s relaxing. No phone, no TV and no kids,” she says. Kaehler’s hectic schedule doesn’t allow much time for pampering, but she indulges in a weekly facial. “It’s expensive, but I saved for it even when I didn’t have much money. Facials make me feel great, save me for the week and help me relax,” she says. With celebrity clients waking her up to coach them at 4:30 a.m., three active sons and a trio of Labs eager to play, Kaehler needs to relax when she can.


Enjoy one of Kathy’s delicious and nutritious recipes
1/2 cup fat free or lowfat milk
1/2 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 tablespoon sugar
Ice cubes or crushed ice
