Passion + Purpose

My two words for the day are Passion + Purpose. They really need no explanation, but I’ll share my thoughts on why they’re rattling around in my head today.

One of the things I learned from my previous entrepreneurial venture was that passion was a prerequisite. I may not have had a road map for success, and I sure encountered stumbling blocks along the way, but the passion was always there. If I ever had a day when I was doubting myself (and there were those days!), passion took over and got me through. The intensity of my passion drove me to get things done, make things work, achieve success. Put simply, I believed in what I was doing, and I loved it.

Having passion is a wonderful thing, but without anywhere to direct it, it’s impotent. That’s where purpose comes in. The word purpose has several meanings, but the definition I’m using is “an intended or desired result; end; aim; goal.” With my business, I found a purpose: to share helpful information in a friendly way, and to connect people through that information. So I aimed my passion directly at my purpose, and some good things happened for lots of people.

Now, I find myself in a similar situation, with complementary passion and purpose. It remains to be seen whether my Passion + Purpose will have the same positive results. Who knows, but I’m a firm believer that if those two things are securely in place, you have a great shot at success. I hope you’ll stay tuned and find out!

And you – are you focusing your passion on a purpose? Do tell – I’d love to hear from you!

  2. Elisa, Thank you for your post on “Passion+Purpose”. I have devoted my life to helping people discover their callings, why they are here on this planet. I often use passion and purpose in my workshops and writings. I coined the term “career-life” (1976-77), to reframe the traditional understanding of career=job to career= life, when I was living and workng in Hawaii for 16 years. I actually came up with that term after working with one of the nation’s first programs for women in transition, what the government back then called “displaced homemekers”. What I learned from those women in my first two classes I taught them, helped to shape my life forever, and I am very grateful.
You are doing many wonderful and powerful activities, and are an excellent role model for women, men, and youth, seeking to make a difference in this world. Keep up your excellent and authentic expression of who you are and what you have to offer the world. Regards, EdC
